Today’s Pay It Forward Giveaway benefits Children First, a non-profit organization in Athens, GA dedicated to promoting safe homes for children in times of family crisis. Another organization, CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates), is a part of Children First, and I (Katy) volunteered with CASA for quite awhile. CASAs are people assigned to children in foster care. As a CASA, I would be assigned to one child or group of siblings, and I would walk with that child the entire time their case was in the court system. CASAs make sure that these children are having their needs met while they are in foster care and that their best interests are being served by the people assigned to their case. As many of you may know, it is easy for foster care cases to languish in the court system. CASAs are responsible for making sure this does not happen, that cases are moving forward and that children are able to get out of foster care and into permanent homes - hopefully with their families of origin - as quickly as possible.

Right now, in Athens-Clarke County there are over 300 children in foster care, and 141 of these children have CASAs - people assigned to them and them alone. A child’s lawyer has many, many cases. A CASA has one. Children First is a fantastic organization, and your donation to them goes directly to helping children in foster care.
